Continue reading

The silence of politicians
The voices of outrage have been heard from the four corners of the world after the attack early last Sunday by the Israeli army to Freedom Flotilla consisting of six ships, with 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid and 700 activists on board, bound for the seized Gaza. And this is in international waters in which the Israeli army has no jurisdiction. Continue reading

Bastion of Impunity,Mirage of Reform Human Rights in the Arab Region Annual Report 2009,
This report documents and analyzes the most significant developments in the Arab region from September 2008 to October 2009 with the aim of assessing both breakthroughs and failures in the observance of human rights. It focuses especially on those developments that reveal Arab states’ readiness to foster a climate conducive to democratization, strengthen the participation of political and civil forces in policy-making, and renounce discriminatory policies of marginalization. In turn, this indicates to what extent regimes in the Arab region possess the political will necessary to engage in democratic reform and respect human rights. Continue reading

It built ties with the Iraqi government after long depicting it as the offspring of an illegitimate occupation. It began to normalise relations with Lebanon, after years of resisting its claim to sovereignty. It accelerated economic reforms. These steps fall short of being revolutionary; some were imposed rather than chosen and reflected opportunism rather than forward thinking. Still, by Syrian standards, they are quite remarkable, especially in contrast to recent fervent militancy. Continue reading
